Prejudice: Face On Programme

In collaboration with Derry City Council, The Junction has participated in the Prejudice: Face On Programme. Through the programme, several teams of community relations workers are paired with a class from one of the area schools. Over the course of several weeks, the community relations teams work with the students to overcome deep rooted prejudices in the community. The students learn about such issues as sectarianism, racism, and inequality.

The programme often includes a one-on-one session with a representative from a community group that the students may know very little about or may have been taught to dislike. Past community representatives have included members of the British military, travellers, government officials, or victims of the Troubles. By sharing his or her story and answering the students’ questions, the community representative often helps to knock away some of the misconceptions the students have grown to accept.

The final stage of the programme is an assembly at one of the local hotels. On this day, all participating classes gather together and each class makes a brief presentation of what they’ve learned throughout the course of the programme. It’s a great opportunity for the students to meet each other and hear about each other’s experiences.
