D.I.C.E. Project - Diversity in Citizenship Education

The D.I.C.E. Project developed from the Anti-Sectarian Programme carried out between January and May of 2003. In partnerships with the Transforming Sectarianism - SEED Project of the Irish School of Ecumenics (Trinity College, Dublin), The Junction is working with four post-primary schools in the Derry City Council area. Begun in April 2004, the project with run through March 2007. It is funded by the Department of Education with the support and cooperation of the Western Education and Library Board. The project is working with principals or members of senior management to:

  • Carry out baseline audits of already existing community relations work within schools.
  • Find a whole-school strategy appropriate for individual schools for the three-year piece of work.
  • Carry out training on exceptional closure/staff development days, within schools, that will both extend teamwork and further personal development and confidence to tackle controversial issues around identity and education for diversity.
  • Discern and implement systems/organisational changes within schools from their own individual starting points, through inclusive processes that will deal with systemic problems such as racism and sectarianism in a progressive and sustainable way.
  • Extend the skills of school staff for community relations in the area of group work, mediation, and conflict management.
  • Build the capacity of teachers, both within and between schools, to deliver the citizenship curriculum and the Schools Community Relations Programme.
