Storytelling
and Training for Community Workers TUH
Update Towards Understanding and Healing is currently working with just six months of interim funding. During this time, our resources have been committed to providing three mixed-gender storytelling residentials and one dialogue residential—unfortunately, we do not have any plans for a training residential over the next six months. However, if our funding applications are successful, we intend to work more closely with community workers to provide training and develop useful models in the wider community sector. Please contact us if you are interested in future trainings, or if you would like to see how our methodology could compliment or contribute to other work. Storytelling
in the Community This weekday residential was held for community relations workers to familiarise them with Towards Understanding and Healing's storytelling methodology. Participants experienced the storytelling process in small groups and received training in the process and ethics of storytelling. Towards Understanding and Healing uses a very straight-forward, no gimmicks methodology. In small, well-facilitated groups of about six people, participants are given the opportunity to talk about their life experiences in as much or as little detail as is comfortable. Each person can generally take as much time as is needed and speaks without interruptions. At the end, the speaker can decide whether or not to take questions or have any discussion. Relax,
Reflect, Revision: A Community Relations Workers Residential This gathering allowed professionals working with communities at various levels to take time out to reflect on their own work and the work of their organisations. The residential was the first step towards more comprehensive training and allowed community workers to identify needs that could be met through more training or other future opportunities. This residential was held in conjunction with the Derry/Londonderry-based Holos Project. |
